“The NLI is "[an] excellent program. [I] feel that it is beneficial for new and experienced leaders."”
Fellow, Class of 2010
Curriculum

The Institute curriculum draws from the Healthcare Leadership Alliance (HLA) Competency Directory, a tool designed by six health professional membership organizations, including the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE), to help nurses develop skills address critical issues encountered on a daily basis. The twenty-five (25) NLI learning objectives fall into the following categories:

  • Communication and relationship management
  • Leadership styles
  • Professional standards and codes of ethics
  • Knowledge of the healthcare environment
  • Business knowledge and skills

The NLI core text is Kouzes and Posner’s, The Leadership Challenge, which provides guidance for leaders to mobilize others to want to get things done.

The Institute’s leadership development model was designed by Community Health Solutions, based on a review of the literature, an audit of publicly available health leadership models and experience evaluating the Institute. It incorporates overlapping and mutually supporting relationships between four domains of leadership development.

Please note: the NLI design, curriculum and policies are adjusted each year based on feedback from Fellows and their employers, so the Institute experience varies from year-to-year.
